When I am planning a trip I request a tour guide from each state and/or metro area that I will be traveling through/near. Most have websites where you can request brochures. My husband and I take advantage of national, state and local parks to save money. Request the ones for the southern route home too, and it may help you decide whether or not you want to go that way. If you and your family have never seen the Mississippi I would suggest planning on a picnic in a park and maybe a boat ride. I don't remember there being much in central TN. The Hermitage near Nashville is on my list but I haven't gotten there yet. Admission is reasonable. Hope you have a great trip!

I haven't looked at the map but won't you be going through the heart of the Great Smoky Mountains? The scenery alone would beat out Graceland or the Opry in my opinion. How about Lookout Mountain or a Civil War battle site (Shilo?)? I prefer historic places over the commercial stuff any day and they aren't near as pricey. Haven't been able to it myself.

Ken:

There is no better advice. I took a laptop on a genealogical trip and scanned hundreds of photographs. I didn't put them on a back-up, not even a zip drive. When I got home the computer died and took those photos with it to an early grave. Those photographs are no longer available having been spread to the winds. I learned my lesson - the hard way.

Lori,

Thank you so much for the info. I know I may sound cheap but until the last week or so we were just planning on driving straight through without stopping anywhere. Money is pretty tight right now and we did a poor job of planning for something we have known about for at least 6 months. Oh well, we all live and learn.
I will take your advice to heart and perhaps it will be just what I needed!
Thanks again.

I'd probably go with either the Opryland (now Opry Mills) area or the airport area. (I noticed there is a LaQuinta in the airport area that is rated fairly high and seems to be more reasonably priced.) Brentwood and Franklin are also nice areas but a little further south. There are several other areas scattered thoughout Nashville that would be quite safe, but I think you'll find high concentrations of hotels in the two areas mentioned.

My top pick would have been the Grand Ole Opry, but you've said that is out of the budget. There is quite a bit to do at Opry Mills which is the former site of Opryland. It's a "shoppertainment" area.

You'll want to see what acts might be in town (especially at that fair). Some of them are very affordable.

You might want a photo-op at the Parthenon replica. That's usually a popular place. There is a nice little spot in the downtown area where you can also get some great photos. There are some parking spots there.

What a great tribute to Rocky! He had a lot of heart that's for sure.

Our Caesar (Doberman) is afraid of thunderstorms too. He always runs for a windowless room when the lightning starts flashing. So far he hasn't been destructive though.

Thanks for sharing Rocky's story. He was a wonderful dog!

Poor Rocky! Our dog gets so disturbed during thunderstorms that she barks at the thunder & just shakes & shakes. We have to give her a tranquilizer when it's really bad.
