Once again I find myself trying to figure out what to write for the Carnival of Genealogy. It’s not a burden, it’s a pleasure. I just find it hard sometimes to fit with the topic!
I have always been a “city boy” and this topic helps to show that! I’ve been living in a small town now for about 5 years and I love it! Growing up I lived in Dallas, Texas and never really did much with lakes or beaches and such. Until last year I had never even seen the ocean except for when I was flying over it! So, I guess I can relate in this article about my first trip to the beach.
It was October of last year when my wife and I decided to go to San Diego and see my son’s graduation from Marine Corps Boot Camp! I only expected to fly in, visit some of the sites and then bring my son home for a while! We met up with my niece on the first night in and it wasn’t long before we were down at the beach! Granted, this was late that night and it was getting dark when we got there. However, I was able to see the ocean for the first time ever and I even got to walk out on the sand. It was an awesome experience and I would like to visit again someday, IN THE DAYLIGHT!
It was amazing how cool the water made the beach feel and how strange the sand felt beneath my feet. I watched as some folks had a fire pit going and were cooking something up while their friends were out catching a few waves before it got too dark. It was a pretty awesome experience and one I could probably get used to if I had to!
I’ve scanned through my photos on my hard drive and I am amazed at the lack of pictures with folks at the beach. I guess there weren’t a lot of folks in my family who went to the beach much or if they did they were having too much fun to take pictures. I sure wish I would have thought to have taken some pictures when I was at the beach. It took me almost 45 years to get there and who knows when I will return.
Hopefully it won’t be another 45 years!
Have a wonderful day everyone!

Thanks for sharing with us your first trip to see the ocean. I hope you don’t have to wait too long until you see it again. I am not a swimmer but I love to watch the water and to walk along the shore.
Thanks so much for sharing! Hopefully you can get back to the beach soon!
KEN, Thanks for sharing this recent beach experience. Two things I recommend for all to experience once in a life-time: a walk on the beach in the moonlight and to sleep/camp under a redwood tree. I got my redwood sleep done when I was 48 years old and am ready to do it again; walking on the beach in the moonlight was last done five years ago. Too long . . . thanks for making me remember.

Although I grew up on the beach, it has always been an awe-inspiring view. I’ve never been one to take it for granted and especially remember sharing my Tennessee cousins’ first view of the sea. It was quite an event.
Ken,
I’m glad you had the chance to see the ocean. It is jaw dropping even for those of us who grew up near it.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I will be seeing the ocean again soon, albeit a different ocean. I’m going to Cherry Point, North Carolina in August to see my son. I’ll be there for a whole week so I may even get to actually go into the water!
Have a wonderful day everyone!
