A Question For My Readers
Jan 23rd, 2008 by kenopoly
Hi everyone!
I’ve been busy lately but I still am working on my genealogy. I’ve actually made pretty good progress on documenting some of my research but I had to take a break because I was starting to get burnt out!
I wanted to post a question to my readers (the few, the proud) about a way to remind myself of birthdays and such. Is there a certain program that you use or that you would recommend to help keep up with birthdays, anniversaries and such? I’ve got Family Tree Maker 16 but it doesn’t have a report for just birthdays, at least not that I can find.
This is probably the first time I have asked my readers for help but hopefully it won’t be the last. I value the input of my readers. Some of you have a lot of experience and I would love to tap into your knowledge!
Well, that is it for today. I’ll say “Thank You” ahead of time for anyone who is willing to help me out!
Have a great day!

Hi Ken,
If you’re talking about birthdays and anniversaries of the living, there are a variety of programs out there that will do this. I use Microsoft Outlook (not Express) for my email and calendar, and I have the calendar set up to give me pop-up reminders of important events. If you want something free, you can set up a calendar in Google or Yahoo; both will send you reminders of events, and you can access them online from anywhere.
My favorite, however, is Geni.com. This is a collaborative genealogy web site, where you can invite members of your family to join and contribute to the family tree. There is also a calendar page, organized by month, where ALL the important dates will show up. I’ve found that I didn’t even know all of my family’s birthdays and anniversaries, and I was helped by having family members input their information, or correct me where I was wrong. You can also set it to show you events of deceased ancestors, if you desire. Best of all, Geni will send you reminders of upcoming events via email, and will give you the option of sending that person a “greeting” which will appear on their profile. You can also upload photos, post family news, send email through the site, etc. We have fun with it!
BTW, I do NOT work for Geni.com, I just enjoy their services.
