Just When I Thought It Was Close …

Have you ever had one of those times where you thought you were almost done with a task and then found you hadn’t even made a dent in it? That’s how I feel today. I’ve been tackling a big mountain of documents, pictures, and other items that had to be filed, organized, and put away. I was so close to being able to see my head above water and then …
Wham!
I’m hit upside the head by another big stack of to-dos. In my previous post, I wrote about my mother-in-law and how we were having to go through her stuff. Yep, you guessed it. I have “inherited” a ton of things that before today I didn’t have any interest in.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m excited about what I have before me. However, before this weekend my only concern was my genealogy. I have tried and tried to get my wife to be interested in her genealogy. She doesn’t show any interest and that is that. However, with the fantastic amount of documents, pictures and other memorabilia that we have acquired this weekend, she may be changing her tune. Of course, her only interest in computers is checking her e-mail, doing her MySpace, and checking the kids’ grades on-line. She never has cared to learn how to scan a picture, much less edit one. So, guess who gets to do all that now? You’re right! Me!
So, I may be pretty busy in the next couple of weeks. I’ll try to continue blogging but there may be times it seems I no longer exist. Bear with me, I really enjoy blogging and it is kind of like genealogy, it grows on you. Perhaps I am now becoming a blogaholic to go along with my geneaholic problems.
Wow, maybe someone should just pray for me! ![]()

Congratulations, Ken - you’re the winner of the unwanted ephemera lottery! Please pass the mother-in-law’s house and pick up all of the stuff that your wife wants you to collect, catalog, scan and keep. Please try to use one of your closets or bookcases for the stuff.
Been there, done that! My brother-in-law captured all of the stuff from their dad’s place, and put it all in a dresser drawer and boxes in the garage. I’ve been through it all, and made notes, but don’t have copies of it. My wife captured some pictures and ephemera, but has no interest in the genealogy stuff.
My advice is to sit back and enjoy it - after all, it is your kids ancestry, right? Are they interested in genealogy at all?
Look at blogging as your therapy time - tell her you HAVE to blog because you’ll let down your readers if you don’t.
Cheers — Randy
PS. Are you from the York County PA Spangler family? I am. Are we cousins?
Randy,
Thanks for the comment. You are right, I am doing this for my children! Sometimes we tend to forget that, don’t we! My oldest daughter, who is 15, is really interested in my genealogy research so that is something to help me out. I think it is time to start her training!
As far as the Spangler part, I’m not really sure. I haven’t done a lot of research on my Spangler roots but I have a cousin who has and she says we are supposed to be related but she hasn’t found the connection yet. Perhaps we should trade notes via email?
Thanks again,
Ken
