Getting Serious About Preservation …
Jun 13th, 2007 by kenopoly
I have been reading a lot of articles at one of my favorite blogs lately. I have come to the conclusion that there is no time like the present to preserve what I have been given. So, today I set into motion the first step of doing just that.
I have been privileged in the fact that I have my mother living right next door to me now. Being so close, I have been able to convince her to let me scan almost every picture she has. That amounts up to quite a few pictures! I have been content to back them up onto a CD and rest in the fact that they are safe. Are they really? I have been reading so much about how CDs fail and I know that my computer could fail at a moment’s notice. The most logical thing I have read lately is that nothing will ever replace a hard copy!
I originally thought I would just buy some photo paper and print out all my prints. How hard could that be? Well, it’s not hard but it sure is expensive. The photo paper costs, the ink is outrageous and you will burn through all these supplies quickly. There has to be a better alternative.
Today, I uploaded the first of many pictures to a site called SnapFish. I did a lot of research and from what I can read, this seems to be one of the better online photo sites. I believe that I will find a good use for their prepaid prints. Hey, 250 4×6 prints for $25.00 plus shipping is actually cheap compared to what I would pay for printing them out myself. I’m really hoping that this will be a good service and it is one that I can do a little at a time. I ordered my first batch of prints today and will see how they turn out.
I’ll let you know of how this works out for me in the future.
