I’m continuing with posting the obituaries I was able to find last week. I hope you are enjoying these posts!
Services for George B. Winkle of Bagwell, who died Sunday at home, were held in the Baptist Church at Sherry by the Rev. Elbert Lloyd and the Rev. Floyd Womack, Monday afternoon. Burial in Fairview Cemetery here was made by Jolley’s Funeral Home.
Born at Clarksville, Ark., March 23, 1900, George Winkle was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Winkle.
He leaves his wife, the former Eunice Spangler; eight children: Bill Winkle, Bagwell; R. J. Winkle, Dallas; Henry Winkle, Hooks; Mrs. Wanda Nell Burrow, Clarendon; Mrs. Winnie Allen Lynch and Miss Marie Winkle, Lubbock; Mrs. Inza Lee Blaylock, Talco, and Mrs. Linnie Merle Meadows, Lindsey, Okla., besides 15 other descendants.
Taken from The Paris News, February 13, 1968.
I’ll share more goodies with you all later! Have a great day!

Hello Ken,
I was doing some family searching and stumbled across your site for the first time. You may be a SPANGLER! But I am Married into the WINKLE’S! And low-and-behold it is the SAME Winkle’s!!
George Byron is My Husbunds Grandfather! His son, R.J. Winkle, is my Father in Law! I’m married to R.J.’s son DAVID WINKLE.
Eunice Winkle, (whom I always called her, or most of us referred to as “Granny Winkle”). She was oh so very sweet and such tiny little thing. I loved her so dearly, and miss her so very much. You know she had Breast Cancer in her earlier years, she said they got hers early enough. But she had always walked with one arm bent up behind her back thereafter. And as do I now fight Aggressive Breast Cancer. I was diagnosed in 2005 and I’m still fighting.
David and I use to go down to Bagwell on Holiday weekends and during the summer to stay alot with her and Uncle “Henry” Winkle. Back when Henry would sometimes live with her. She had shared with me about how for many years after she had Breast Cancer that her side and arm had always bothered her to where she had just gotten into the habit of keeping her arm folded up behind her back to stay comfortable. She would always do EVERYTHING with ONE arm. Including stirring that “CHOCOLATE GRAVEY” and “SQUIRL STEW” that the Kids and Grandkids always loved so much!! And that lady loved to fish too! She would fry up and eat even a Perch no matter how SMALL it was. She would say…”if it thinks its big e-nuf to get on me hook, then its big e-nuf for eat’en!!” She was a remarkable woman, and never complained about anything! You just couldn’t help but love her to death!
Although granny did not pass from breast cancer…. She beat it, and lived many, many, long years after, as I said, she said, she had BC in her YOUNGER YEARS.
She actually passed from complications of Alzhiemer’s, if i have my facts straigth. I was very ill at the time she passed, and so didn’t remember all the details and did not get to make it to her service. David however, did get to attend with his Dad though.
I was searching for Henry and Bill Winkle’s Obits when I found Granny and George’s here on your page, and was so beside myself to have found the Obit History of Granny and even George Byron here. For, I know alot about George from Stories R.J. tells. But Now I Have his Obit so this is Great, because I don’t believe R. J. even has an Obit article on his Dad after all these years. He was the oldest Boy and had to tend everything back then and didn’t think of everything during that time back then, or somehow got lost between then and now.
Anyway, I’m glad I found your site. And would like to come back and read regularly, if you don’t mind?
By the way…being your on the Spangler side what would Eunice Winkle/Granny be to you in relations?
Thanks for alowing my to drop in on you!
God Bless!
Debbie L. Winkle
Debbie,
It’s so good to hear from someone on the Winkle side. I still don’t know a whole lot about my father’s side of the family but it is always so interesting learning about them.
Eunice would be my 1st cousin, once removed. I guess the easiest way to explain that would be that my father and Eunice were first cousins!
I invite you to continue to check back and be sure to keep an eye on my site as I will be adding my Spangler research soon, although I have a big move coming up soon.
Have a great week!
Ken
My name is Christi Meadows, I am the grand-daughter of Linnie Winkle or Meadows, and the great grand-daughter of George Byron Winkle. We were on here looking things up and came across this page, and my grandmother Linnie was wanting me to see if you would mind telling us who you dad is? Her and Winnie have been trying to find information on the Spangler side of the family for quite some time now. Granny Winkle was her mother and my great grand-mother…. We would greatly appreciate your time with this. Thank you very much.
hey…im michayla the great great grand-daughter of george and my mom is christi. I think my self that seeing my grandmothers dad is so totally cool she tell me a lot of things thay use to do when i wasnt even born yet, and i bet that i would of loved to have george around but its still great getting to see his wonderful daughter!!!!
Just great to find this… I am Linnie Winkle Meadows Pitchford’s daughter, Ralinda Jo Meadows Mills… I lived with Grandaddy and Granny Winkle more than at home until I was about 10 years old. Granny Winkle is (Eunice Magnolia Spangler), daughter of Nathan and Mary Ellen Cornett Spangler Hand. She did have breast cancer in 1977 as Debbie stated. BUT… She had arthritis in her left shoulder and that is why she did every thing with one arm behind her back. I spent MANY hours rubbing her shoulder and back for her as Mother says that they too all did as children. Granny WENT HOME peacefully one night in her sleep of natural causes. Mother, Marie and myself had been attending her everyday at the nursing home as she wouldn’t eat for the staff. We took turns being there for meal times. As she did have senile dementia she didn’t know us most of the time, but she was always looking for her “kids”.
Aunt Lucille (Francis Lucille Spangler) Hadaway Staggs just celebrated her 92nd birthday, she lives with her husband John Staggs in Bowie, Az. She was recently diagnosed with pancriatic cancer. She is the only surviving child of Nathan and Mary Spangler.
Mother says that her grandmother, Mary, lived with them when she passed but she doesn’t remember much about her except that she loved to fish. She died digging worms to go fishing.
[...] In the past week or so I have had a little more inspiration to continue. Strangely, it is from folks I have never met! It is also due to a post that I published right at 2 years ago. Check out this simple post of mine from May 17, 2007. It is the obituary for George Byron Winkle. [...]

I would love to hear from you and share information with you. Just contact me using the contact form on the left menu of my website http://www.kenspangler.com
Thanks for your comment!
@Jo
Jo, thanks for your comment. It is so nice to see so many posts from the Winkle side. How interesting that Frances Lucille is still alive. I would love to be able to talk to her right now but, unfortunately, I am in the process of a big move. We are moving from Texas to North Carolina in about 7 more weeks. Lots of planning and packing to finish up with as well as a family reunion on my mother’s side.
Perhaps we can somehow connect during this time! If you’d like to contact me just use the contact form!
Thanks,
Ken
